Hope Island

A private, waterfront residence on Hope Island, Queensland

Positioned within the canal network of Hope Island, the Hope Island Residence is conceived as a quiet response to waterfront living in Southeast Queensland — an architecture shaped by climate, light, privacy and the immediacy of water.

The house is organised along the canal edge, where living spaces unfold toward the waterfront through a sequence of layered indoor and outdoor environments. In contrast, the street elevation is deliberately restrained, providing privacy and a sense of retreat from the public realm while establishing a calm and grounded presence within the neighbourhood.

The architecture is composed as a collection of sculpted volumes, carefully positioned to frame water views, capture prevailing breezes and moderate the subtropical climate. Deep overhangs, recessed openings and shaded thresholds temper sunlight while creating a softer transition between interior and landscape.

To the canal frontage, expansive glazing dissolves the boundary between house and water. Terraces, covered external rooms and integrated landscape spaces extend daily living outward, allowing the residence to engage directly with the waterfront condition and changing light across the day.

A restrained material palette of off-form concrete, natural stone and timber anchors the project within its coastal setting. Materials are expressed with clarity and permanence, creating continuity between architecture, interiors and landscape while reinforcing a tactile and enduring character.

Landscape and interior design are conceived as integrated architectural systems rather than applied elements. Planting, materiality, joinery and spatial sequencing work together to produce a cohesive living environment — one that is defined by calmness, openness and connection to place.

Designed for contemporary waterfront living on the Gold Coast, the Hope Island Residence balances openness with privacy, creating a home that is both deeply connected to its environment and carefully protected from it.
