Wyndham Cultural Centre
Wyndham Cultural Centre Public Open Space is a collaborative project between Alexandra Buchanan Architecture and Urban Spark Studio, creating a new civic square in the heart of Werribee. Designed to support arts, cultural programming and public events, the project establishes a flexible and engaging public realm that extends the Cultural Centre’s presence into the surrounding urban environment.
As the first stage of a broader precinct transformation, the project reimagines the existing Cultural Centre forecourt as an adaptable community gathering space. The design introduces a lightweight civic infrastructure composed of repurposed shipping containers, modular furniture, lighting and temporary rigging systems, allowing the square to accommodate a diverse range of performances, exhibitions, markets and community events.
Public art forms an integral part of the project, with mural works by Drez embedded within the fabric of the space. These artistic interventions reinforce the identity of the square as a dynamic cultural destination and create a strong visual connection between the Cultural Centre and the wider community.
By transforming an underutilised forecourt into an active civic space, the project strengthens connections between the Cultural Centre, Werribee’s main street and the broader public realm. The revitalised square encourages day and evening activation, supports cultural engagement and contributes to the ongoing evolution of Werribee as a vibrant civic and cultural destination.
Wyndham Cultural Centre Public Open Space demonstrates how adaptable public realm design can foster community participation, support creative expression and create meaningful civic places that respond to changing urban needs.
