Buena Vista

Buena Vista is a new family residence in Coorparoo, Brisbane, shaped by the intersection of cultural identity, memory and subtropical living. Designed for a young family of Greek heritage, the home draws inspiration from traditions of gathering, hospitality and life lived across thresholds, creating a contemporary response that is deeply connected to both family and place.

Situated on a prominent suburban site, the architecture is defined by a careful interplay of curve and plane. Sweeping concrete forms and textured rendered surfaces soften the building’s presence while responding to Brisbane’s climate, filtering light and providing shade throughout the day. A large-format perforated masonry screen wraps the upper level, creating a dynamic play of shadow and privacy while referencing the material richness of Mediterranean architecture through abstraction rather than imitation.

The home is organised around a series of indoor and outdoor living spaces that dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape. At its centre, a generous covered terrace becomes the primary living room of the house, extending daily life into the garden and reinforcing the subtropical lifestyle that defines Brisbane living. Framed views, filtered light and carefully curated planting create a sequence of spaces that are both intimate and expansive.

Materiality is restrained yet tactile. Rendered masonry, natural stone, timber and linen work together to create an atmosphere of warmth and permanence. Throughout the home, light becomes an active material, animating surfaces and reinforcing the connection between architecture, climate and everyday ritual.
