Queensland Specialist Orthopaedic Suite

Greenslopes Hospital Fitout

The Queensland Specialist Orthopaedic Suite is a high-end commercial fitout located within Greenslopes Specialist Hospital in Brisbane. Conceived as a calm and refined healthcare environment, the project reimagines the traditional clinical setting through a softer, more textural and residentially inspired architectural language, designed to ease patient experience and promote a sense of comfort and wellbeing.

Situated at the upper level of the building, the suite is defined by expansive views across surrounding Brisbane hilltops. From the outset, the brief prioritised the experience of arrival and waiting, ensuring that natural light and outlook were not reserved solely for private consulting rooms but were instead shared across the entire suite. The intention was to create a welcoming, uplifting environment where patients feel immediately at ease upon entry.

Rather than following a conventional healthcare layout where perimeter consult rooms dominate access to light and views, the design challenges this hierarchy. Through careful planning and detailed spatial testing, the layout is opened up and reorganised around a central waiting area, which becomes the social and spatial heart of the suite. This core is surrounded by circulation and consulting spaces, allowing movement to flow intuitively around a shared communal centre.

The edges of the plan are deliberately softened, dissolving the rigidity typically associated with clinical environments. Private consult rooms are carefully integrated into the overall spatial composition, ensuring that they remain connected to light, outlook and the broader spatial experience of the suite.

The interior environment is shaped by a residential sensibility, with a focus on warmth, tactility and material richness. A carefully considered palette introduces softness and calm, balancing the functional requirements of a medical facility with the desire to create an environment that feels welcoming, human and reassuring.

Natural light plays a central role in defining the atmosphere of the space. The entire suite is drawn into a continuous relationship with daylight and external views, enhancing spatial clarity and reinforcing a sense of openness throughout. The result is a healthcare environment that prioritises wellbeing through connection to landscape, light and carefully considered spatial sequencing.

The Queensland Specialist Orthopaedic Suite demonstrates Alexandra Buchanan Architecture’s approach to healthcare design, where clarity of planning, human-centred thinking and material sensitivity come together to transform conventional clinical environments into calm, uplifting and intuitive spaces for both patients and practitioners.

Material Selection

Key to the concept of this space having a softer, less clinical feel was the careful selection of a material palette to suit whilst also being mindful that the materials must withstand the rigors of a commercial space. A soft palette of timber, stone, beautiful rich velvet and accents of brass make this space texturally rich and warm
