Far removed from its surrounding lattice-fronted Queenslander neighbours, the Toowong House is set against Mount Cootha’s north facing bushland slopes and strikes quite the silhouette against the gum trees.
The husband-and-wife owner / developer team approached ABA with a clear vision in masonry for their home, but with height constraints over the site they needed some creative thinking to make it a reality.
The external form is simple and bold, whilst internally floor levels and double height volumes cleverly trapeze the steeply sloping site to follow the landscape, directed towards city views. A sunken lounge with feature fireplace and wrapping joinery looks out to the pool, breaking the external envelope as it looks across built-in planters, softening the brickwork.
Brickwork breezeways further break the solidity of the exterior which will ultimately be claimed by climbing vines as the landscape matures.
