The extension and renovation to this heritage cottage at Port Melbourne creates a sense of spaciousness that defies the constraints of its tight urban setting. The transformation allows a young family to remain in a neighbourhood they cherish and live in a contemporary home that provides them with ample space to grow.

A second storey addition at the rear of the cottage creates space for two extra bedrooms in a loftlike setting. Discreet windows capture city views and deliver natural light to the interior. Downstairs, a compact kitchen and living space is made to feel more generous by means of a double height volume created above the lounge. A skylight and high level window introduce light from above and illuminate the pathway from the front door.

Dark grainy timber finishes, used in the kitchen and living room, draw on the aesthetic of the historic timber floors to create warmth and textural interest. A similar timber finish is applied to the living room ceiling and wall to bring focus to the living area and visually unite old and new.

Testimonial

Alexandra Buchanan Architecture truly made our housing dreams become a reality!

The innovative design for our home provides a feeling of space and balance in our small inner city block, delivers some striking features that provides the house with an architectural edge and provides the softness that we demanded for our family home.

Alexandra engaged with us in a friendly yet professional manner, providing an excellent experience guiding us through each stage and the building tender. The ongoing support throughout the build was first class.

We personally loved the initial stages of the design process where we actively engaged with Alexandra Buchanan to discuss different taste, design and layout options. The resulting drawings and images were brilliant with some images providing 3D perspectives. Alex developed a strong relationship with our chosen builder, Rock City Building Group, and collectively produced an outcome that we just love living in every day.

Worthy of noting, when the council challenged our final design on a heritage overlay basis, Alex’s thoroughness in minuting meetings and seeking written confirmations on the directions provided from the council in a pre-planning meetings directly saved us time for approvals and a costly redesign.

Casey Grant and Daniel Murphy highly recommend Alexandra Buchanan Architecture.
